WIC staff should reflect the diversity and rich cultural experiences of WIC families. FNS has invested $31.5 million into a 5-year Inter-Agency Agreement (IAA) with USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to invest in the WIC workforce.
Combining the experience and expertise of FNS and NIFA, including NIFA’s partnerships with Land-Grant Universities and Colleges, this multi-year WIC workforce development initiative will invest in research, education, and extension to address issues in the WIC workforce in order to improve the participant experience. This includes addressing issues of diversity and cultural competency of the WIC workforce.
Investing in the WIC workforce will support WIC staff and ensure that families received skilled and culturally relevant care. In July 2023, USDA awarded a cooperative agreement to the University of Minnesota to develop a National WIC Workforce Strategy that will inform the remainder of this work. The strategy is expected to be released in spring 2024.
