State Agency Food Safety Inspections Report for SY 2018-19

This memorandum provides guidance regarding continuation of the food safety inspections reporting requirement under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for fiscal year (FY) 2019. The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2019, (P.L. 116-6) contains language that amended section 9(h)(3) of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (NSLA), 42 USC 1758(h)(3), to require the state agency’s food safety inspections reporting requirement for FY 2019. State agencies must report to the Food and Nutrition Service the number of annual food safety inspections obtained by schools under their jurisdiction for school year 2018-2019. Please submit the report by November 15, 2019, to: NSLPFoodSafetyInspections@fns.usda.gov.

FY 2019 NSLP Equipment Assistance Grants for School Food Authorities

The purpose of this memorandum is to distribute $30 million provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2019, (Public Law 116-6), to state agencies to competitively award equipment assistance grants to eligible School Food Authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program. This memorandum also provides guidance on the specific terms and conditions, period of performance, timelines, funding goals, and reporting requirements for these grants.

National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program: Questions and Answers for Charter Schools

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) along with other child nutrition programs (CNPs) administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) make it possible for schools to serve wholesome and appealing meals to students each day. FNS recognizes the importance of providing the necessary technical assistance to all schools eligible to participate in the CNPs so that all students have access to school meals that contribute to their physical and mental well-being. To assist in this effort, FNS is providing updated Question and Answers (Q&As) to address questions we have received from charter schools. This memorandum revises the current USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) process for State agencies and eligible service providers[1] seeking a waiver of statutory or regulatory Program requirements for the Child Nutrition Programs (CNPs), including the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP), the Special Milk Program (SMP) (SMP), and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). This memorandum supersedes SP 27-2017, CACFP 12-2017, SFSP 08-2017, Child Nutrition Program Waiver Request Guidance and Protocol, dated April 26, 2017.
