This memorandum and its attachment supersede SP-37-2011, Child Nutrition 2010: Enhancing the School Food Safety Program. Attached are questions and answers regarding the school food safety requirements for schools participating in FNS child nutrition programs.
The provisions of the interim rule entitled School Food Safety Inspections published on June 15, 2005, at 70 FR 34627, could not become effective until approval of the associated information collection requirements by the Office of Management and Budget. Those requirements were cleared by OMB on August 26, 2005 under OMB Control Number 0584-0006. This document announces the effective date of the information collection provisions contained in the originally-published rule.
This interim rule reflects amendments made by section 111 of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 which require schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program to increase the number of food safety inspections from the one inspection currently required to two inspections per year; to post the most recent inspection report in a visible location; and to release a copy of the report to members of the public upon request.
This document clarifies SA’s oversight responsibilities for food safety inspections under the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program.
