Comment Request - Study of Non-Response to the School Meals Application Verification Process

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP) provide subsidized lunches and breakfasts to millions of students each school day. Students are certified eligible to receive free or reduced-price (F/RP) meals through application or direct certification. When eligibility is determined using an application process, school districts must annually verify eligibility of children from a sample of household applications for that school year, unless the State agency assumes responsibility for verification.

SP13-2017: Release of the FNS-828 Paid Lunch Price Data for School Year 2015-2016

FNS announces the release of Paid Lunch Price data for School Year 2015-2016. The Section 12 (p) of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act and 7 CFR 210.14 (e)(7) require school food authorities (SFAs) to report their paid reimbursable lunch prices to the State agencies for publication by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) each school year. The released data includes information on the most frequently charged paid lunch prices in elementary, middle and high schools across the country. The data is published and made publicly available as reported by State agencies.

New Reporting Procedures for FNS-828 Paid Lunch Price Report for School Year 2016-2017

This memorandum announces the change in reporting procedures of paid lunch prices in School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program for School Year 2016-2017. SFAs are expected to report the most frequently charged price for elementary, middle/junior high and high school levels to their State agency. A complete list of prices reported on form FNS-828 should now be submitted to FNS by State agencies using the Food Programs Reporting System (FPRS).

Direct Certification in the National School Lunch Program Report to Congress: State Implementation Progress, School Year 2014-2015

This report responds to the requirement of Public Law 110-246 to assess the effectiveness of State and local efforts to directly certify children for free school meals. Direct certification is a process conducted by the States and by local educational agencies (LEAs) to certify eligible children for free meals without the need for household applications. The 2004 Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act required LEAs to establish systems to directly certify children from households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits by school year (SY) 2008-2009. This report presents information on the outcomes of direct certification for SY 2014-2015.
