Department of Defense - Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance for Certain Members of the Armed Forces

Included in the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2001, signed into law on Oct. 30, 2000, is a provision requiring the Department of Defense (DoD) to pay certain service members and their families a Family Subsistence Supplemental Allowance (FSSA) so they will not have to rely on food stamps to make ends meet.

Military Subsistence Allowance

The National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2006 (PL 109-163, Section 608), permanently authorizes the supplemental subsistence allowance for low-income members of the Armed Forces with dependents.
