Understanding the Use of SNAP Online Applications

Currently, 46 of 53 state agencies accept online applications for SNAP benefits from new applicants, and 33 state agencies allow SNAP participants to recertify to renew their benefits online. The purpose of this study was to collect information about online application features, protocols and procedures used for processing online applications, and perceived advantages and challenges with using online applications.

SNAP COVID-19 Emergency Allotments Guidance

USDA has issued guidance to states in implementing Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020, which provides for the issuance of emergency allotments (supplements) based on a public health emergency declaration by the Secretary of Health and Human Services under section 319 of the Public Health Service Act related to an outbreak of COVID-19 when a state has also issued an emergency or disaster declaration.

Department of Education Information on the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program

Households with a child  approved to receive free or reduced price meals under the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program during the 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 school year are eligible for the Federal Communication Commission’s Emergency Broadband Benefit. EBB is a federal program to help eligible families pay for internet service during the pandemic.

Collection of Race and Ethnicity Data by Visual Observation and Identification

This memorandum states visual observation and identification by Child and Adult Food Care Program (CACFP) institutions and facilities and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sponsors is no longer an allowable practice for program operators to use during the collection of race or ethnicity data.  

USDA will update CACFP and SFSP policy guidance.

Reaching Those in Need: Estimates of State SNAP Participation Rates in 2018

This report – part of an annual series – presents estimates of the percentage of eligible persons, by state, who participated in SNAP during an average month in FY 2018 and in the two previous fiscal years. This report also presents estimates of state participation rates for individuals in eligible “working poor” households (households with earnings) over the same period.
