On September 7, 2010, USDA
launched the
Recipes for
Healthy Kids
competition in support of
First Lady Michelle Obama's
Let's Move initiative.
USDA challenged teams of school
nutrition professionals, chefs,
students, parents and community
members to develop creative,
nutritious, tasty and
kid-approved recipes that
schools can easily incorporate
into
National School Lunch
menus. The recipe competition
was designed to increase
student’s intake of whole
grains, dark green and orange
vegetables, and dry beans and
peas.
Chefs provided culinary
expertise, school nutrition
professionals shared insight as
to what can be accomplished in a
school setting, and kids and
parents made sure that students
would choose these nutritious
items in school through
taste-testing events. Over 340
recipes were submitted in three
categories - Whole Grains, Dark
Green and Orange Vegetables, and
Dry Beans and Peas (legumes).
Then, the recipes were judged
and ranked by teams of
American Culinary Federation
chefs and FNS staff to determine
the top 5 semi-finalists in each
category. Teams of three judges
– an FNS staff member, ACF chef,
and school nutrition
professional - visited the 5
semi-finalists in each category
to meet their team and taste
their recipe as part of the
school lunch program,
highlighting the school’s
success in a media event. The
judges determined the finalist;
public voting determined the
Popular Choice.
Congratulations
to all for their hard work and
dedication!
