Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

SNAP Video Public Service Announcements

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is pleased to announce the availability of two 30-second Public Service Announcements (PSAs) in English and Spanish. These PSAs are suitable for both TV and in-store broadcast and can also be used in meetings and presentations.  You can watch them at the URLs below and then order them from us on DVD or BetacamSP format.  The two PSAs are “Door” and “What’s Important.”

What are the PSAs about?
The PSAs promote the nutrition benefits of SNAP. “Door” features the inside of a refrigerator and shows different people reaching in to remove or put away food while the narrator explains that SNAP is for people whose income is low: young and old, with a job or looking for a job, with or without a car.  It reminds the viewer that SNAP is the new name of the federal Food Stamp Program.  The “What’s Important” PSA talks about the basics -- family, health, shelter, and enough to eat. It shows a family eating breakfast, then mother and her young daughter grocery shopping and using their SNAP electronic benefit card to purchase nutritious food. It also identifies SNAP as the new name of the program.

Can I see and hear the PSAs online?
Yes, you can see and hear a small and compressed streaming version of the PSAs at the following links. They are in Windows Media Player format. If clicking on a link does not launch the PSA on your computer, then open the player; click on “File” and then on “Open URL”; paste the URL into the box and press Enter.

How can I use the PSAs?
The PSAs are appropriate for broadcast use (television and cable) and for in-store play by businesses such as supermarkets and department stores that have video public address systems.

Who can use the PSAs?
States, community organizations, faith-based groups, or businesses doing SNAP outreach can use the PSAs as educational tools in their outreach efforts. They can also “pitch” the PSA to local television or cable stations.

How do I “pitch” the PSAs?
Contact the PSA Director at your local television or cable station and inquire about the possibility of getting one or both PSAs aired in your community as a public service and in support of your SNAP outreach efforts. If your local retailers have in-store video capabilities, talk to the store manager about getting the PSAs added to the play-list as a public service.

Can I localize the PSAs?
Not within the playing time.  However, the station can add local contact information / telephone numbers at the end, or the announcer can read that information.

How can I get a copy of the PSAs?
Send an email to SNAPoutreach@fns.usda.gov.

What formats are available?
The best format for most TV stations and large in-store video installations is a BetacamSP tape.  The PSAs are also available on DVD.  Please specify the format you prefer in your request.
