Demos/Grant Projects

Assessment of Alternatives to Face-to-Face Interviews in SNAP: The purpose of this grant is for State agencies to participate in an assessment of the impact of waiving the face-to-face interview for SNAP benefits on program outcomes. Participating states will implement demonstration projects in which the interview for SNAP benefits is waived.

Childhood Hunger Grants: In May 2011 the University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research, with funding from the Food and Nutrition Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, competitively awarded a first round of grants in the amount of $2.45 million to qualified individuals and institutions to provide rigorous research that expands our understanding of hunger among children in the United States and the attendant policy implications.

Elderly Nutrition Pilot Project: The Food and Nutrition Service awarded grants totaling $2.4 million to six State food stamp agencies to conduct elderly nutrition pilots from 2002 to 2004. The purpose of these pilots is to test three different approaches to eliminate barriers to participation in the Food Stamp Program by eligible persons age 60 years and older. Successful projects increased the number of participating seniors by 20 to 35 percent in less than 2 years. An evaluation of the demonstration is available here.

Healthy Incentives Pilots: Authorized by the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, the Healthy Incentives Pilot (HIP) will test and rigorously evaluate the impact of financial incentives at the point-of-sale for the purchase of fruits and vegetables on the diet quality of participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Summer Food for Children Demonstrations: The Summer Food for Children Demonstrations are a series of projects, authorized by Congress under the 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Act, to develop and test methods of providing access to food for low-income children in urban and rural areas during the summer months when schools are not in regular session.

Administer Research-Initiated Grants for Research on the WIC Program: The purpose of this RFA is to select an institution-/organization (i.e. accredited university) that can develop and administer a series of researcher-initiated grants pertinent to the research area, coordinate activities among researchers and widely disseminate findings.

Reaching Underserved Elderly and Working Poor in SNAP - FY 2009 Pilots: On September 17, 2009, USDA's Food and Nutrition Service awarded grants totaling $3 million to six State agencies for piloting outreach programs to increase Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation. The funding targets eligible seniors age 60 and older and eligible working poor households.

School Breakfast Pilot Project: This congressionally-mandated 3-year pilot, which began in school year 2000-2001 in six school districts, is studying the impact of the availability of universal-free school breakfast on breakfast participation and measures related to elementary school students' nutritional status and academic performance.

WIC Special Project Grants: FNS awards WIC Special Project Grants to be used for "special State projects of regional or national significance to improve the services of the program." In order to meet the statutory objectives, Special Projects need to address issues of critical and timely importance to the WIC program.
