State Nutrition Action Plans

SNAP Potential State Goals

FNS National Nutrition Education Conference 2005

Each of the four program areas listed below has goals. State Teams should select one goal from the list of eight goals below:

Promote Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles

  1. Promote adoption of healthy dietary patterns and regular physical activity among individuals, families and communities based on key messages in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. (Use/adapt Team Nutrition, Loving Support, Eat Smart. Play Hard TM, and other national resources whenever possible.)

  2. Collaborate across FNS Programs and with community groups to communicate consistent nutrition messages through multiple channels in order to reduce the risk of overweight and obesity.

Promote Healthy Community/School Nutrition Environment

  1. Increase awareness among teachers, staff and parents about the importance of a healthy school nutrition environment and school wellness policies that foster the development of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors in children (Use Changing the Scene, Making It Happen and other national resources whenever possible)

  2. Implement coordinated educational activities and campaigns to help parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, staff and others understand their importance as role models for children and motivate them to exhibit healthy eating and active lifestyle behaviors.

Promote Breastfeeding

  1. Support breastfeeding by creating breastfeeding-friendly community environments by working in partnership with FNS Programs and other partners.

  2. Conduct a social marketing campaign to encourage breastfeeding (Use Loving Support Campaign resources).

Promote Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

  1. Promote consumption of fruits and vegetables through partnerships and collaborative interventions between the nutrition assistance programs and other related groups.

  2. Increase awareness of the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption through social marketing campaigns targeting persons eligible for FNS Programs.
