Goal:

To conduct statewide nutrition education campaigns that foster public awareness regarding the importance of good nutrition and physical activity, and that promote lifestyle behavior changes that lead to positive nutrition status, healthy body weights, and fitness.

Objective:

By 2010 to develop and produce two statewide nutrition education campaigns that are consistent with the USDA 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPyramid Food Guidance System.

Accomplishment:

During January to December 2007, FIFNC developed and produced the "Fruits & Veggies-More MattersŪ Resource Manual" that focuses on the promotion of increased fruits and vegetables. The manual compliments and promotes the Fruits & Veggies-More MattersŪ public health initiative developed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Produce for Better Health Foundation. In addition, the manual is consistent with the recommendations from the USDA 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The "Fruits & Veggies-More MattersŪ Resource Manual" was disseminated to numerous agencies and organizations, including:

  • WIC distributed 150 manuals to local WIC agencies that will reach over 331,000 families.

  • Child Care Nutrition Programs distributed approximately 1,400 manuals to child care contractors that oversee 5,300 sites serving a daily average of almost 400,000 meals to children.

  • Obesity Prevention Program distributed 100 manuals to county health department "Healthy Communities Healthy People Coordinators" with the potential reach of over 300,000 participants.

  • Department of Education distributed 500 manuals to Florida public schools, charter schools and residential child care centers participating in the National School Lunch Program with the potential reach of approximately 2.6 million students.

  • The website that contains the "Fruits & Veggies-More MattersŪ Resource Manual" received over 325 hits in the first two months of it being posted.
