Food Stamp Program

Golden Grocer Hunger Champions Announcement

Application period extended to July 31

The Food Stamp Outreach Coalition is pleased to announce the Golden Grocer Hunger Champions Program. These awards represent the retailer component of the Hunger Champions Program by recognizing the instrumental role retailers play in the Food Stamp Program (FSP). Retailers’ commitment to the Food and Nutrition Service’s (FNS) vision of ending hunger and improving nutrition and health has ensured the success of the FSP. Highlighting successful activities that improve service to food stamp recipients and low-income customers will provide retailers with exemplary models to replicate.

Selection of Golden Grocer Hunger Champions will be based upon those activities that contribute to the realization of FNS’ vision. Retailers that provide a quality shopping experience for food stamp recipients and low income customers highlighted by excellence in customer service, outreach, and/or nutrition education will be considered for the 2007 Golden Grocer Hunger Champions. Awards will be acknowledged by FNS in the fall.

The nomination process is simple. Awards will be selected in three categories of food stamp authorized firms: local stores affiliated with large corporations, small independent grocery stores, and farmers’ markets. Anyone may submit a nomination, and firms may self-nominate. Nomination forms will be available on various web pages such as the Food Stamp Program’s outreach pages and the Food Research and Action Center (see websites below). All nominations for this year’s awards must be submitted by July 31, 2007.

The Food Stamp Outreach Coalition is a national group of organizations and individuals that provides a forum for the sharing of outreach ideas, strategies, and resources in order to improve the accessibility of the Food Stamp Program and increase participation by eligible persons. The Coalition seeks to broaden community awareness, improve support for the FSP, and is committed to improving its effectiveness through viable partnerships.

Questions concerning the Golden Grocer Hunger Champions or the Food Stamp Outreach Coalition should be emailed to FSOC@fns.usdsa.gov.
