Verification Center
Milwaukee County, Wisconsin

Since December 2004, Milwaukee County’s busy office at1220 Vliet Street has had a Verification Center. The center was created as part of a system to channel customers who bring in verifications to a service area specifically designed to receive and process verifications. The verification center records and acts on all verifications for changes within 48 hours of receipt. Customers may still choose to wait for the next representative to take and process their verifications if they wish.

Caseworkers appreciate the center because they do not have to update cases unless completing an application, review, or eligibility alert. Caseworker interruptions are reduced, which allows the caseworker more time to focus on casework accuracy.

Unanticipated problems experienced during implementation included periodic backlogs due to staffing issues and the need for more time to file verification materials in a customer’s hard copy file.

Suggestion: Ensure that workers assigned to this unit are knowledgeable about and experienced with verification policies and requirements.
