Promising Practices

Customer Service Centers
Florida Department of Children and Families, Suncoast Region

The Suncoast Region has implemented a pilot modernization plan to increase accessibility to services and improve customer and employee satisfaction in the Food Stamp Program. Regional service centers have been reconfigured to provide more opportunities for customers to engage in self-service. Copy machines and fax machines are available to all customers at no charge. The service centers employ greeters to welcome the customers, assist with the completion of Food Stamp Program applications, guide customers through the application process, and answer general questions. An intranet application is currently available for clients to use with the assistance of an on-site proctor. The Region and the State hope to roll out an internet-based application and verification system in May 2005.

Copy machines and fax machines are necessary, as well as computer terminals with internet access for customers to complete online public assistance applications and conduct job search.

The amount of time that customers spend waiting in the lobby has been substantially reduced. Interview times and application processing times have also decreased. Customer surveys show a 90% satisfaction rate with the new process.
