FY 2005 WIC Hispanic Breastfeeding Promotion and Education Project

On September 23, 2005, FNS awarded funds in support of the WIC Hispanic Breastfeeding Promotion and Education Project. Per the Request for Applications, only one award was made.

The purpose of the project is to develop breastfeeding educational materials and tools that specifically target the barriers to breastfeeding for Hispanic WIC participants.
The goals of this project are to:

  • Provide WIC staff with appropriate tools and messages to effectively communicate with Hispanic participants about the benefits of breastfeeding;

  • Develop culturally aware, culturally tailored breastfeeding educational materials in print and video, targeted to Hispanic mothers and families;

  • Identify the breastfeeding barriers that Hispanic mothers face and dispel myths that may be the result of historical traditions or inaccurate information;

  • Identify the primary networks within the Hispanic family structure or extended family that provide breastfeeding support; and

  • Build on the community health and support networks that are so significant in the Hispanic culture.
