Interagency Workgroup

USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is working with the Office of Safe and Healthy Students of the Department of Education (ED) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, acting through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This Interagency Workgroup will continue to provide information and technical assistance to state and local educational agencies and school food authorities to meet these new local school wellness policy requirements.

Technical Assistance and Guidance Plan

FNS, with input from CDC and ED, has revised and published a 5-Year Technical Assistance and Guidance Plan as an update to the initial draft from September 2011. This plan includes updates based on the findings of the needs assessment activities that informed its development, as well as a progress report on the workgroup's technical assistance activities. State agencies should direct any questions about this plan to their FNS Regional Office.

Joint Collaborators' Statement

Twenty-six national associations and organizations have issued a joint statement with FNS, CDC, and ED to recognize the critical role schools play in promoting wellness among staff, students, and families. These national associations and organizations affirm their support of local school wellness policies as a key framework for schools’ efforts to create a healthy environment for children that supports nutritious food choices and physically active lifestyles.

Local School Wellness Policy Stakeholders Workgroup

USDA Food and Nutrition Service will be convening an external stakeholder workgroup to assist with the implementation of the 5-Year Technical Assistance and Guidance Plan for local school wellness policies to enhance the nutrition and physical activity environments in schools across the country.
