The SNAP Quality Control System measures the accuracy of State eligibility and benefit determinations. Data collected by quality control are also used for program improvement and analysis.

Quality Control Error Rates

The FY 2012 national payment error rate of 3.42 percent represents the lowest rate in the history of the Program. The 3.42 percent is the sixth year in a row that the national payment error rate has been lower than the previous year, and the ninth year in a row that it has been below the 6 percent rate established in the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 as the standard for State payment error rates. Over 99 percent of those receiving SNAP benefits are eligible and payment accuracy was 96.58 percent, a historic high.  Payment errors are almost 62 percent less than what they were in FY 2000, which has reduced improper payments by $4.1 billion in 2012.

States receiving FY 2012 performance bonuses were also announced with the release of the quality control error rates on June 21, 2013. The awardees for best and most improved payment accuracy will divide $24 million based on caseload. These States are Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wisconsin for best payment accuracy and Maryland for most improved payment accuracy.
