Incident: Severe Storms

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • On Sept. 1, 2023, FNS approved the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) request to waive the 10-day reporting requirement for replacement of food purchased with SNAP benefits that was lost as a result of power outages due to a series of strong storms that occurred on Aug. 24, 2023. The waiver request applies to the ten counties of Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne. The waiver is in effect through Sept. 8, 2023.

When: June 25, 2021

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • On Oct. 28, 2021, FNS approved Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) request to extend D-SNAP operations to add two additional counties in response to the impact of severe storms between June 25 and June 26, 2021. With this extension, the state agency has been approved to operate D-SNAP in four counties. The state agency will begin the application period on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, and will operate until Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, excluding Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021.
  • On Aug. 6, 2021, FNS approved Michigan DHHS request to operate D-SNAP in 2 counties in response to the impact of heavy rains which caused flooding and power outages between June 25 and June 26, 2021. On July 15, 2021, President Joseph R. Biden issued a major disaster declaration with authorization for federal individual assistance for the following counties: Washtenaw, Wayne.
  • On July 9, 2021, FNS approved a Michigan DHHS request to waive timely reporting of food loss for households in Wayne County, for replacement of food purchased with SNAP benefits that was lost as a result of heavy wind and rainstorms that began on June 26, 2021. This waiver approval allows impacted households to request replacement of SNAP benefits through July 15, 2021.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • On Aug. 20, 2021, FNS approved the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services request to waive timely reporting of food loss for households in Wayne, Washtenaw and Oakland counties as a result of power outages, heavy wind and rainstorms that began on Aug. 12, 2021. This waiver approval allows impacted households to make a request for replacement of SNAP benefits and August 2021 Emergency Allotments issued on Aug. 7-16, 2021. The waiver will be in effect through Sept. 10, 2021.
