In honor of National Volunteer Week, I would like to recognize an incredible group of individuals who make up the Anti-Hunger and Opportunity Corps.. These full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members are serving one year volunteer terms in hunger projects across the United States. Their mission is to help Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) partner organizations build capacity in SNAP outreach. The hope is that the work of the VISTA members will sustain long after their service is complete.

I would like to personally thank our Corps members and their sponsoring sites for your dedication to ending hunger in America. Your willingness to volunteer as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a year of your life is a strong statement of your character and heart for fellow Americans. National service is one of the most highly respected activities in the public and non-profit sectors. At FNS, we are very excited and thankful to have such a talented and passionate Corps of VISTA members to focus on SNAP outreach.

FNS serves over one in four Americans. In our current economy, our programs are needed more than ever. Your work in SNAP outreach is helping low-income families get nutritious food and keep a healthy, active lifestyle. Your work to make sustainable change will be felt on a national level, and I applaud your efforts and encourage you to continue your great work through your year of service and beyond. Together we can end hunger one communityat a time. Thank you.
