Disaster Assistance

About Us

The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is responsible for providing nutrition assistance for disaster-affected areas requiring a Federal response.

In the aftermath of a major disaster or emergency, FNS coordinates with State, local, and voluntary organizations (as well as with other Federal agencies) to determine potential nutrition assistance needs of disaster victims. FNS activities include:

Bullet Obtaining appropriate food supplies;
Bullet Arranging for transportation of those food supplies to the disaster area;
Bullet Authorizing Disaster Food Stamp Program benefits.

To accomplish these activities, the FNS Disaster Team communicates with a similar team at the FNS Regional Office level to analyze the disaster situation and nutrition assistance needs. Also, funding issues are usually resolved at this time; thus, when State social services or food distributing agencies request nutrition assistance, it can be provided immediately.
