Core Nutrition Messages

Background

Accurate, consumer-tested, powerful...

The nutrition assistance programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) reach millions of children and low-income people each day. They provide access to food resources and, through nutrition education, assist families in making healthier choices.

The FNS core nutrition messages support the agency's long-standing commitment to improving the nutrition of children and low-income families. The recently released messages, supporting tips, advice, and guidance complement the earlier core messages, MyPlate, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Primary Audience

Key Topics

  • Mothers of Preschool Children (2-5)
  • Mothers of Elementary School-Aged
    Children
  • Children (8- to 10-Year-Old)
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Low fat milk
  • Child feeding

These resources were designed to reach and resonate with mothers and children served by WIC, SNAP, Child Nutrition, and other Federal nutrition assistance programs. New web-based tools help to convey key messages - videos and a video game for kids & and illustrate some of the many ways to disseminate the messages.

The messages make it easier for State and local agencies to deliver consistent messages and speak with one voice a goal that FNS supports. When programs work together to coordinate efforts, they increase the likelihood that participants receive their messages and take action.
