Farm to School

USDA Initiatives Supporting Farm to School

Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food
Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food is a USDA effort committed to strengthening local and regional food systems that will support small and mid-sized farms and ranches, strengthen rural communities, promote healthy eating, and protect our natural resources. This website provides detailed information about how existing USDA programs can support local food activities in communities, connections to USDA people working to support local and regional foods and forums to share stories, ideas, images and more.

Chefs Move to Schools
Chefs Move to Schools is a part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Initiative which matches chefs with school districts to help schools improve health and nutrition. The chefs adopt a school and work closely with teachers, parents, school nutritionists and administrators. They teach new techniques and recipes for healthier meals that meet the schools’ dietary guidelines and budgets. And, they engage young people in learning about nutrition and making balanced and healthy choices.

HealthierUS School Challenge
The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 that recognizes schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through healthy school meals, nutrition education, and physical activity and education. As of February 2010, HUSSC was incorporated into the Let’s Move! Initiative, and monetary incentives are now attached to each award level: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold of Distinction.

The People’s Garden
The People’s Garden Initiative is an effort which challenges its employees to establish People's Gardens at USDA facilities worldwide or help communities create gardens. People's Gardens vary in size and type, but all have a common purpose - to help the community they're within and the environment.
