The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) provides health-insurance to low income children who do not qualify for Medicaid and have no health insurance.  Many uninsured, low income children are eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP, but do not know it.

Background on State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Special Milk Program for Children, Summer Food Service Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Determining Eligibility for Free and Reduced Price Meals and Free Milk in Schools: Disclosure of Children's Eligibility Information to Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (PDF
This interim rule addresses the disclosure of children's free and reduced price eligibility information for the State Medicaid Program (State Medicaid) and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).  FNS will be accepting comments on this rule until April 11, 2001.

Report to the President on school-based outreach for SCHIP.

FNS can assist in outreach efforts to increase enrollment in Medicaid and SCHIP because many eligible children participate in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs or the Child and Adult Care Food Program.
