Disaster Assistance

Key Information for Participants:

Although the Child Nutrition (CN) Programs are not intended to be disaster assistance programs, CN policies are designed to allow State agencies flexibility in program administration in areas covered by a Presidential disaster declaration.

School and child care nutrition programs are dependent upon congregate settings, and FNS has authority to operate these programs only when children are in attendance.  Thus, in situations where a natural disaster has occurred, yet children are still able to congregate in schools or child care centers, FNS provides administrative accommodations to ensure continuation of meal program benefits.

These administrative accommodations are made possible through the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (PL 100-707).  Section 301 of the Stafford Law allows any Federal agency charged with the administration of a Federal assistance program , if so requested by the applicant State or local authorities, to modify or waive, for a major disaster, such administrative conditions as would otherwise prevent the giving of assistance, if the inability to meet such conditions is a result of the major disaster.

Accommodations are situation-specific and are based on State agency's recommendations for providing relief to individual School Food Authorities and/or child care institutions.
