The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) was initiated by Congress as a pilot project to encourage schools to serve more fresh fruits and vegetables.  The pilot became a permanent program in 2004 and currently operates in 25 schools in each of eight states and 25 schools among three Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs).  The states are: Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Washington, and the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, (representing the Pima and Tohono O’odham communities),  New Mexico (the Zuni Tribe) and South Dakota (the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation).

Six additional states (with 25 schools each) were added to the FFVP in the 2006 appropriations and the program will run through June 30, 2008 for these states.  The states are: Utah, Wisconsin, Idaho, Connecticut, New Mexico, and Texas.

At present, the FFVP operates in 375 schools in 14 States and 3 ITOs.
