Steiner Named FNS Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Programs

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2007 – Agriculture Under Secretary Nancy Montanez Johner today announced the appointment of Eric Steiner as Deputy Administrator of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service’s Special Nutrition Programs. As deputy administrator, Steiner will be responsible for improving the health and well-being of Americans by overseeing the administration of 14 of the Nation’s nutrition assistance programs.

“Eric Steiner’s strong dedication to public service and his experience in food and nutrition-related issues in the U.S. Senate will serve him well,” Johner said. “I am confident the department and the American people will be well served as he continues his commitment to improving the lives of his fellow Americans in this new role.”

Programs under his leadership include the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and Commodity Distribution.

Most recently, Steiner served on the professional staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, under the leadership of then-Chairman Thad Cochran of Mississippi and the Committee’s current ranking Republican member, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. Prior to his Agriculture Committee work, Steiner was a Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellow with the Congressional Hunger Center.

A native of Berne, Indiana, Steiner earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in agricultural education from Purdue University and is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor degree from the George Mason University School of Law.
