USDA Awards $4 Million in Team Nutrition Training Grants

WASHINGTON, Sept. 19, 2006 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today awarded $4 million in Team Nutrition Training Grants to 14 states. The grants are designed to help children develop better eating and physical activity habits.

"Improving the overall health and well-being of our children requires a team effort," said Johanns. "We are committed to improving school nutrition for all students. These grants will provide an additional resource to our partners to promote good nutrition and physical activity for children."

Team Nutrition is one of USDA's Food and Nutrition Service efforts to provide schools with nutrition education materials for children and parents as well as technical assistance materials for school food service providers and communities to support healthy eating and physical activity. Team Nutrition activities support two pillars of the President's HealthierUS Initiative that was launched in 2002 to help Americans live longer and healthier lives.

Two types of grants are being awarded: Team Nutrition Training Grants and Wellness Demonstration Project Grants.

The Team Nutrition Training Grants provide training and technical assistance on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans; MyPyramid and MyPyramid for Kids; and the agency's HealthierUS School Challenge, established to recognize schools that take specific steps to improve their nutrition environment. Eleven state agencies will receive a total of about $2 million under this program: Idaho ($197,630), Illinois ($200,000), Kentucky ($91,388), Maine ($176,693), Michigan ($200,000), Montana ($200,000), New York ($200,000), North Dakota ($199,702), Ohio ($198,615), Oregon ($60,897), and South Carolina ($199,957).

The Wellness Demonstration Projects Grants assess the implementation of local wellness policies as required by the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. These policies must be in place by the start of the current school year. Three state agencies will collectively receive approximately $2 million in these grants: California ($600,000), Iowa ($600,000), and Pennsylvania ($599,403).
