USDA AWARDS SCHOOLS $6 MILLION TO PROMOTE FRESH FRUIT AND
VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION FOR CHILDREN

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26, 2002--Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced the award of $6 million to improve fruit and vegetable consumption among the nation’s school children. A total of 100 schools, representing a diverse mix of schools in both rural and urban settings, in Indiana, Iowa, Ohio and Michigan and six schools in the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico received funds.

“Finding practical solutions to combat the epidemic of overweight and obesity among our children is part of the President’s Healthier US Initiative,” said Veneman. “Improving the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet, coupled with physical activity are positive steps toward changing behaviors for a healthier lifestyle.”

The 2002 Farm Bill provided funding for the pilot programs to study how increased consumption of fruits and vegetables affect other eating behaviors such as snack choices and participation in school meal programs. USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service and Economic Research Service worked in partnership with the National Cancer Institute’s 5 A Day program, the Produce for Better Health Foundation, the American School Food Service Association and the participating states of the pilot.

“We know that balanced diets and physical activity are essential to children’s growth and learning,” said Eric M. Bost, under secretary for food, nutrition and consumer services. “Partnerships at the local, state and federal level are needed to find the practical solutions we need to combat obesity and overweight. These pilot programs offer excellent opportunities for creative approaches and possible solutions.”

Over 800 schools applied to participate in the pilots for the remainder of the school year. Through a variety of methods, such as free standing kiosks, snacks in the classroom, a “grab and go” option for children before or after school and snacks in after school care programs, fresh and dried fruits as well as fresh vegetables will be available throughout the school day. USDA’s Economic Research Service is evaluating the pilot and will submit a report to Congress in May 2003.

Attached are the lists of schools, by state, selected for the Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Program. The lists contain each school’s name, the town/city in which it is located, and enrollment. The $6 million available for the pilot program will be distributed based on enrollment. The exact amount each school will receive has not yet been determined.

Other USDA efforts to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables include an increase of $25 million to the U.S. Department of Defense’s fresh produce program for use by  schools, the Eat Smart.Play Hard Campaign, and collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen and expand school based efforts to promote healthy eating and physical activity.

The national 5 A Day for Better Health Program gives Americans a simple, positive message—eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day for better health. The program is jointly sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the Produce for Better Health Foundation, a nonprofit consumer education foundation representing the fruit and vegetable industry. USDA is part of a new federal 5-A-Day Partnership with DHHS that was launched last spring by Secretaries Veneman and Thompson.
