AS OBESITY INCREASES, USDA TO HOLD SYMPOSIUM ON WHY AMERICANS
CHOOSE THE FOODS THEY EAT

WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 1999 Following release of a report showing a dramatic increase in obesity among Americans, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is sponsoring a day-long symposium on "Why We Choose the Foods We Eat." 

Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman will open the event at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 3, in USDA's Jefferson Auditorium. He is expected to challenge the nation to change its eating habits and exercise more.  Presentations by nine nationally recognized experts on diet and motivation will follow. They will address some of the physiological, environmental, and psychological factors that influence our food choices.
