States (Washington, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Iowa,
Michigan, Mississippi, and Ohio) and in 25 schools among three
tribal organizations: Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, Gila River
Pima Community and the Tohona O’odham Community in Arizona, and Zuni

 |
In 2005, President George W. Bush signed
Public Law 107-171, adding Utah, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Texas,
Connecticut and Idaho to the existing FFVP. |
Background
 |
The program was initiated as a pilot by
Public Law 107-171, the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of
2002. The law authorized a Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Program in four
States and one Indian Tribal Organization (ITO). The purpose of the
pilot was to learn how consuming more fruits and vegetables affects
children’s other eating behaviors (e.g., snack choices and
participation in school meals programs). |
 |
The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization
Act of 2004 made the program permanent in the four pilot States and
one ITO and added four more States and two ITOs with a total
authorized funding of $9 million per year. The six States added in
2005 are funded at $6 million until June 30, 2007 (or until funds
expended). |
Participants
 |
188,970 people participated in FY 2006. |
 |
Authorized States select schools for
participation. Every child in the selected school is eligible to
participate. |
Budget
 |
$9 million in FY 2006 and FY 2007
(est). [Note: 6 additional States were funded at $6 million
in FY 2006, until funds expended.] |
