Goal:

Promote adoption of healthy dietary patterns and regular physical activity among individuals, families and communities, based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Objective:

Promote healthy eating and physically active lifestyles across the lifespan.

Accomplishment:

  • The MiSNAP committee convened a subcommittee in November 2007, to work on a statewide school breakfast campaign.

(This subcommittee will be working with the Michigan Surgeon General's Healthy Kids Healthy Michigan schools workgroup. MDE will be kicking off the campaign in early April. The Center for Civil Justice will be releasing a school breakfast report in mid-March 2008. The Michigan Nutrition Network will be revising it's 2003 social marketing campaign, Eat Healthy Eat Breakfast.)

FNS Programs Involved:

  • Michigan Department of Education
  • Department of Community Health
  • Michigan Nutrition Network
  • MSU Extension, Governor's Food Policy Council
  • Center for Civil Justice

Month/Year Completed: January 2008

Objective:

Develop a strong, productive collaboration among MISNAP partners throughout the state in order to facilitate a needs assessment and the formation of "SNAPlets" or local branches of the main SNAP team.

Outcomes:

  • The MiSNAP committee wanted a closer working relationship with communities, to hear the issues that communities face and to know the training and resource needs. The idea of a SNAPlet (a SNAP Locally Engaged Team) was formed and a group in western Michigan was recruited. In October 2007, the first SNAPlet meeting was held. In November of 2007, a second group requested more information on becoming a SNAPlet and is considering the option.

FNS Programs Involved:

  • MSU Extension
  • Community Health
  • Tribal Nations
  • Schools

Month/Year Completed: November 2007
